About PREN

OUR VISION

A future in which all Elephants can thrive in freedom and dignity in their protected natural habitats, as part of naturally functioning, evolving ecosystems.

OUR MISSION

To end the capture and exploitation of Elephants by humans. To advocate for the release of captive-held Elephants into the wild. Where freedom and reintegration into the wild is not possible, to seek the best ethical solutions in the most natural surroundings possible. The acceptability and viability of these ethics and conditions are to be evaluated relative to what the individual Elephant would be able to experience in the wild. To support the effective protection of wild Elephants and the environment that they inhabit.

SCOPE, OBJECTIVES AND ACTIONS

Pro Elephant Network (PREN) consists of a global community of diverse individuals and organisations, united in their common concern for Nature, their deep association with the natural world and their commitment to apply their experience for the greater good.

These individuals and organisations embrace expertise from both within western academies (including the field of science, conservation, animal welfare, human and non-human rights, philosophy and ethics, advocacy, economics, community leadership, writing, the media, social justice and the law) and the indigenous paradigm.

PREN provides a strong framework of co-operation and networking to reverse and cease harmful practices towards Elephants including but not limited to capture, imprisonment, captive breeding, abuse, training, exhibition, commercial contact and trade in live Elephants and body parts. Employing evidence-based information, PREN promotes the intrinsic value and self-determination of free-living Elephants for the purpose of ending all exploitation of Elephants.

THE PRO ELEPHANT NETWORK WILL:

  • Share expert knowledge and documentation to enable local, national and international advocacy for greater understanding of the intrinsic value and biological, psychological social and other needs of Elephants and in pursuit of PREN Vision and Mission.
  • Support, advocate for, litigate for the revision of international and local policies, treaties and legislation in pursuit of PREN Vision and Mission, including but not limited to:
  • (a) prohibiting the removal of live elephants from the wild and their export to ex situ locations;
  • (b) preventing future capture or importation of wild Elephants
  • (c) preventing commercial relocations
  • Promote the release of captive elephants to rehabilitation facilities for their reintegration to the wild, to natural habitats and societies; where this is not feasible, the transfer to sanctuaries as a last resort, the establishment of best-possible care conditions.
